Bhutan Waste Banks (BWB): An innovative way to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste in Bhutan

Greener Way was awarded the Regional Competitive Block Grant (RBG) to implement sustainable solutions for tackling plastic waste in Bhutan.

Their project, “Bhutan Waste Banks (BWB): An innovative way to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste in Bhutan, is a gender-transformative and innovative green initiative to address the growing waste problem in Thimphu, Bhutan. It will foster economic and social inclusion of vulnerable groups while contributing towards Bhutan’s commitment to remain carbon neutral and the “Zero Waste 2030” agenda. BWB is a sustainable model for plastic waste reduction based on a circular economy that uses incentive-based plastic waste management practices to transform plastic waste into wealth creation.

Greener Way, founded in Bhutan in 2010, and is a leading waste management solution focused on creating a safe environment and reducing reliance on landfills and incinerators. They offer services such as collection, pickup, segregation, landfill disposal, and analysis of waste generation trends. Objectives/Key Outcomes

  • Output 1- Establishment of 12 waste banks covering Thimphu city
  • Output 2 – Up-scaling of Eco-Pole plant in Memelakha, near Thimphu landfill
  • Output 3 – Establish PET shredding and washing plant in Memelakha, near Thimphu landfill

Key activities

  • Establishment and operation of 12 Waste Banks under BWB
  • Relocate Eco Pole, an initiative to upscale plastic waste into poles that can be used in fencing farmlands, traffic etc
  • Establish & operationalise PET Washing and Shredding Plant to divert PET waste from landfills to be recovered as PET flakes to be exported for raw materials.
  • Develop BWB Mobile App with modules on waste collection services, pricing, waste bank location, waste calculator, waste deposits passbook, customer care, waste bank literacy etc.
