The key objective of the project is to improve solid waste management in selected zones (Zone 4&5). The project consists of three main components
1) at the national level, focused on policy and capacity building,
2) at the regional level, on waste management processing facilities, and
3) at the island level, on community waste management by developing Island Waste Management Centers (IWMCs) in 43 islands of Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu Atolls. The project will also assist in gap filling in the MEMP Project area, the North Central Region (Zone II) on inhabited Islands the project has previously worked on in the Raa, Baa, Noonu and Lhaviyani Atolls.
The project also supports work on a single use plastics phase-out strategy and action plan; and a pilot to demonstrate alternatives to household reliance on single-use plastic bottled drinking water.
