The project aims to improve management of fisheries at regional and national levels including support to establish mariculture in targeted atolls in the Maldives. The proposed ProBlue activities linked to this project address more sustainable fisheries management through introduction of an alternative to the current use of single-use plastic drinking water supplies on multi-day fishing trips for tuna fishing fleets. PROBLUE support to help implement the Ministry’s June 2019 pledge on World Ocean Day to eliminate single use plastics from fishing vessels. An initial 84 fishing boat operators joined the pledge to stop ocean dumping of their plastics waste and seek alternatives to plastic bottles for drinking water by their crews on overnight yellow-fin tuna fishing trips . Boat operators and 14 fish processing companies additionally pledged to play a role in the collection and transport chain for the cleanup of ocean plastic waste. WB Funding would support a technical analysis and implementation plan on alternatives for the Maldives fishing fleets (about 1800) to retrofit boats for bulk water storage or reverse osmosis units with investment costs and ancillary facilities at harbors and ports
