Chakra Suthra has successfully launched two Trash2Cash Machines in Kurana, Sri Lanka, marking another significant step in promoting sustainable plastic waste management. These innovative machines, designed to accept plastic waste and reward users with redeemable points for use at selected outlets, are now operational, thanks to the active involvement of selected micro-entrepreneurs from nearby communities who have been empowered to manage and operate the units.
To ensure effective and sustainable operations, Chakra Suthra, in collaboration with Zero Plastic, organized comprehensive training sessions. These covered technical and operational guidance on managing the Trash2Cash Machines, best practices in waste handling, and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), equipping participants with both practical skills and essential knowledge on safety and ethics.
In addition, a dedicated youth volunteer group received specialized training to conduct community awareness sessions. These sessions focus on educating the public about plastic waste, its environmental impact, and how communities can economically benefit through the use of Trash2Cash Machines.
This initiative not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also fosters community ownership, youth engagement, and local economic empowerment, creating a model that can be replicated in other regions.
