In Patihani, Chitwan, a powerful grassroots movement is redefining plastic waste management, led by the Bote community and championed by the women at its heart. With direct support from the Project CAP under the PLEASE Project, the community has launched an innovative, sustainable waste management model designed to protect the environment while safeguarding livelihoods.

At the center of this effort is the “Waste Smart Village” model, a pioneering approach that connects the local tourism sector, including hotels and hospitality partners, with community-led recycling efforts. By aligning economic and environmental interests, the model strengthens the circular economy and brings tangible benefits to both people and the planet.

The impact doesn’t stop there. Across seven municipalities, youth groups and schools are joining the mission through the Waste Smart Club, promoting household waste segregation, recycling practices, and environmental stewardship. These young leaders are nurturing a culture of responsibility and resilience within their communities.

To date, these united efforts have resulted in the collection and recovery of 560.7 tons of plastic waste, directly engaging 7,667 people from different  communities, schools and individuals. This remarkable achievement reflects the true potential of collective leadership and community-driven solutions in tackling plastic pollution.

Together, Patihani is not just cleaning up—it’s #ClosingTheLoop on plastic waste, creating a replicable model of environmental action across South Asia.
