In a major step toward promoting environmental sustainability and reducing plastic waste in the Maldives, the Small Island Geographic Society (SIGS) inaugurated the first biobag pilot production facility in the Maldives. This facility is located in HDh. Hanimaadhoo.
The facility, located within the ‘Small Island Research, Innovation, and Sustainability Hub’, marks the beginning of pilot-scale production of compostable, biodegradable bags designed to replace conventional plastic bags and packaging.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Mariyam Mariya, joined by senior officials from local authorities, and representatives from the World Bank and UNOPS PLEASE Project Implementation Unit in the Maldives.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mariya emphasized the new centre as “a model of innovation,” highlighting that the bioplastic bags produced, offer a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. She commended SIGS for its ongoing efforts in research and sustainable waste management, noting that such initiatives play a vital role in reducing waste and decreasing reliance on imports.
The biobag production initiative aims to provide eco-friendly alternatives for widespread use, including for small businesses, island waste management centers (as waste collection bags), fisherfolk, and local food producers for packaging.

SIGS emphasized that this pilot facility represents a significant step forward in developing sustainable materials that align with the Maldives’ broader goals of reducing plastic pollution and promoting circular, locally driven innovation.
