Island Climate Initiative (ICI) recently launched GP-Labs, the country’s first and only laboratory dedicated to testing of recycled plastics for quality, safety, and compliance with Certification Standards.
The opening ceremony, held on 19th June 2025, welcomed a distinguished group of invitees from government agencies, the private sector, and development partners—all gathered to witness the beginning of a new chapter in sustainable plastic management. The event featured a brief inauguration followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility’s state-of-the-art lab equipment.
As a national first, ICI’s lab provides essential quality testing services that play a pivotal role in verifying the quality of recycled plastic content. This supports regulatory compliance and provides packaging manufacturers and FMCG companies with greater confidence in the materials they use.
Although the primary purpose is to test recycled material from Good Practice-certified recyclers, the lab’s services are available to any organisation or individual seeking plastic quality testing.
With operations now underway, ICI is setting a new benchmark for recycling excellence in Sri Lanka. This facility fills a long-standing infrastructure gap, and its launch is expected to catalyse new opportunities for innovation, compliance, and circular business models across the island—and beyond.
