On March 17, 2025, Biocomp Nepal celebrated a major milestone in the journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable future with the inauguration of its plastic recycling facility in Simara, Nepal. This cutting-edge facility is designed to tackle the challenge of low-grade plastic waste—materials often discarded, incinerated, or left to pollute rivers and landfills.
At the heart of this innovation is the transformation of low-grade plastics into eco-friendly composite boards, offering a sustainable and durable alternative to traditional plywood. These recycled products directly contribute to the green economy by turning waste into valuable resources while significantly reducing environmental harm.
As part of the broader RIVER+ project, supported under the PLEASE initiative, Biocomp Nepal has also prioritized community empowerment. Over 500 informal waste workers (IWWs) have been trained in essential areas such as occupational health, migration awareness-which includes understanding their rights, risks, and available support systems as migrant workers, and reproductive health. These trainings not only equip them with critical knowledge but also integrate them into a strengthened plastic waste value chain—enhancing both their economic opportunities and social well-being.
By addressing plastic pollution at its roots and placing people at the center of the solution, Biocomp Nepal’s initiative stands as a powerful model of how environmental and social goals can align. It exemplifies the core values of the PLEASE Project—creating sustainable change through innovation, inclusion, and regional cooperation.
This facility represents more than just a recycling plant; it is a beacon of transformation, resilience, and hope for communities and ecosystems alike.
