The Regional Training Programme on Innovative Financing Options for Addressing Plastic Pollution in South Asia successfully concluded in the Maldives, bringing together policymakers and experts to explore sustainable financial mechanisms for plastic waste management. Organized by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), under PLEASE Project, the two-day event, held from February 17–18, 2025, was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and attended by Hon. Ahmad Nizam, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. Representatives from six South Asian countries participated, reaffirming the region’s commitment to tackling plastic pollution through innovative financial strategies.

The program focused on key areas such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Plastic Credits, and Results-Based Financing, essential components of effective waste management policies. On February 18, during the second day of the training, government representatives from six South Asian nations presented their EPR frameworks. India shared insights on its implemented system, while Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka outlined their national approaches, highlighting regulatory structures, financing mechanisms, and industry integration. The discussions reinforced the need for regional collaboration, acknowledging that South Asia’s shared environmental challenges require a unified approach to develop effective and sustainable solutions.

The training program served as a significant platform for knowledge exchange and policy development, setting the foundation for strengthened financial mechanisms to combat plastic pollution across South Asia. The outcomes are expected to guide future policy actions, fostering greater cooperation and commitment toward a cleaner, plastic-free region.
